The first French-language publication by American typographer, illustrator, and puppeteer William A. Dwiggins (1880–1956): a 1934 puppet play with prophetic undertones, featuring intelligent machines endowed with consciousness.
William Addison Dwiggins (1880–1956) was a leading American graphic designer, typographer, and illustrator of the early 20th century who lived and worked in Boston and Hingham, Massachusetts. Dwiggins designed books (for publisher Alfred A. Knopf), lettering, typefaces (for the Mergenthaler Linotype Company), advertisements, and illustrations. At the same time, he nurtured a passion for woodcarving, which led him to create two private puppet theaters in his home in Hingham, in 1930 and again in 1937. For more than ten years, with the help of a group of friends, Dwiggins wrote the scripts, designed and carved exceptional wooden puppets, and designed and built the sets.
